Laboratory Interior Design
Vibrant, safe and productive interiors for research buildings: bench layouts, casework, finishes, colour and light, and the write-up and collaboration spaces that surround the science.
What it covers
The room your researchers actually work in
Interior design is where a laboratory is won or lost for the people using it. Reach, clearance, storage, light, acoustics and the distance between one step of an experiment and the next are all interior decisions, and together they decide whether a facility feels alive or institutional.
Bench and equipment layouts
Island, peninsula and perimeter arrangements selected per zone, planned around protocols, hood positions and sample paths.
Casework and furniture specification
Worktops, understructure, storage and fittings specified on performance against the chemistry in use. We sell none of it, so the specification serves the laboratory.
Services distribution
Gas, power, data, water and drainage brought to the bench through a planned spine, so future changes do not mean demolition.
Finishes and materials
Flooring, ceilings, partitions and joinery chosen for durability, cleanability and the reagents actually handled in each zone.
Write-up and collaboration areas
The seam between laboratory and office: desks, huddle spaces and meeting rooms placed where the analysis genuinely happens.
Lighting, acoustics and ergonomics
Daylight, task lighting, noise control and working heights treated as performance factors rather than finishing touches.
Vibrant environments
Laboratories do not have to feel clinical to be compliant
A research building can meet every containment and airflow requirement and still be a grey box that nobody wants to spend nine hours in. Arena designs vibrant, fresh and productive interiors within exactly the same technical constraints, because colour, daylight and material warmth cost very little and change how a facility feels every single day.
Colour with a purpose
Accent colour used deliberately, to mark zones, aid wayfinding and give a facility identity, rather than as decoration applied at the end.
Daylight and views
Benches, write-up desks and breakout areas positioned to borrow daylight and outward views, which improves alertness through long analytical sessions.
Fresh, breathable interiors
High air quality and low-emission finishes so the air in the offices and write-up zones is as considered as the air in the fume hoods.
Materials that feel good
Warm timber tones, planting and tactile finishes introduced where chemistry allows, softening an environment that is otherwise stainless steel and epoxy.
Places to step away
Breakout, pantry and informal seating designed as real destinations, so people can leave the bench without leaving the building.
Productive by design
Acoustic separation, ergonomic working heights and storage within reach, so the environment removes friction from the work instead of adding it.
The commercial argument is simple: research talent is scarce, and people choose and leave employers partly on the strength of the place they work in. A vibrant laboratory is a recruitment asset that pays back every year of its life.
Worth knowing
The wider scope around the interior
The building as well as the fit-out
Laboratory architecture is a core Arena service: master planning, building form, structural coordination and plant strategy, developed from the same understanding of the science that drives the interior.
The offices as well as the labs
Workstations, cabins, conference rooms, breakout, pantry and reception are part of what we design, and they account for close to half a typical R&D floor plate.
Taken together the scopes produce a facility that reads as one piece of design. Each is available on its own where that suits the project.
Beyond the laboratory
Offices, cabins and amenity, to the same standard
Close to half a typical R&D floor plate is not laboratory at all. Arena designs those areas with the same rigour: workstations, executive cabins, conference and AV, breakout, pantry and reception, so the whole facility reads as one considered piece of design.
